After I posted my contrast nmm gold tutorial recently I had a few people asking for a steel tutorial using the same contrast technique.
So, being the nice guy that I am here it is! 馃檪

Here are the stages I used-

1. Undercoat grey seer spray.

2. Place initial light reflections with space wolves grey. (Try not to make these too regular)

3. Inside the first stage reflections I used gryph charger grey to darken the area.

4. I repeated the process with basilicanum grey.

5. Black templar was then used as a final shade in the darkest areas of the blade.

6. I then used grey seer base paint as a thin glaze to soften the gradient between stages.

7. I wasn't happy with the blend at this point so I tried out apothecary white as a glaze to smooth the transitions and it worked great.

8. Pure white was then used as a thin glaze inside the lightest reflections on the blade.

9. Then I used pure white as a sharp line highlight to define the blade and add hot spot reflections and I also went back with a little black Templar to deepen some shading.
You could finish at this stage if you wish but the next stage shows what more can be added.

10. With the blade complete I wanted to add some colour to it. Steel and silver reflect their environment so it's nice to keep that in mind.
I decided to add some gold reflections to the bottom of the blade with nazdreg yellow (imagine it's next to a gold leg). I also added some blue reflections with Aethematic blue to give it a daytime feel.
This stage isn't usually done much with nmm gold do it's fun to do with steel as it can set the scene for your miniature.

I hope you like and you find it useful!

Cheers all! Daz
I wanted to see how easy and fast it would be to achieve a decent skin tone as its always a part of a mini that can cause problems.

Here are the stages I used-

1. Over an undercoat of wraithbone spray I applied a 50/50 mix of darkoath flesh and contrast medium.

2. I then shaded in select areas with pure darkoath flesh.

3. I repeated this process with fyreslayer flesh focusing more on the deeper recesses.

4. Then with pure cygor brown I picked out the deepest areas such as the eyes, mouth and ears.

5. The entire face then got a glaze of 50/50 mix skeleton horde and contrast medium.

6. I then washed around the nose, lip and cheeks with an equal parts mix of flesh tearers red, fyreslayer flesh and contrast medium.
At this point I also washed a small amount of space wolves grey around the eyes.

7. I then highlighted the face with wraithbone base paint. I did this in about 3 thin layers.

8. Pure white was then used to pick out the very edge and define the face.

9. I used a little basilicanum grey to define the eyes before painting them and finishing the hair.

There you go! As with the nmm tutorial I did this technique is faster than regular painting and I think it gave a good result.
This way of painting skin isn't that different to what I'd normally do but it takes the hassle out of trying to lay down a smooth basecoat.

I'm thinking of doing a steel nmm tutorial next as it was a popular request last time.

Cheers! Daz
Here is my finished Shroomancer from the Gobbapalooza set.
This was originally intended to be part of a Golden Demon entry for this years competition but as I was asked to judge again it went on the back burner as I finished some army stuff.
The sculpt is by Seb Perbet and it's my favourite character from the set i think. I love everything that's going on in the scene. It's a mini diorama really with the goblin tripping out on shrooms and seeing his visions come to life!
I knew when I saw it that it would be great fun to paint. Not only because it's an awesome miniature but I knew I could throw a lot of colour onto it as well.
Choosing the colours to use was quite difficult really as the 'Eavy Metal version is pretty much spot on in terms of balance and colour choice. I wanted my version to be different however so I settled for a similar colour palette but tweaked some of the nuances to make it unique and my own.
The base was very fun to do, it was constructed mainly from thin slate and wood putty. This putty is great to use for bases, it dries fast and carves very easily. The little shrooms and critters on the base where especially fun to paint!
Hope you like!
With the release of the new Citadel contrast paints I thought it would be a great opportunity to re visit painting non metallic metals (nmm).
I wanted to try out the new contrast colours and apply them to this technique to see what results I could achieve.
With this in mind I picked a suitable miniature which was a Stormcast Liberator and undercoated it with the new wraithbone spray.
All contrast paints where thinned with the new contrast medium during this process.
Here are the stages I did when painting-

1. Wraithbone spray
2. Nazdreg yellow
3. Snakebite leather
4. Fyreslayer flesh
5. Cygor brown
6. Black templar
7. Iyanden yellow glaze all over
8. Wraithbone base paint highlight
9. Pure white highlight

You can see that most of the technique involves a lot of glazing the colours over each other. Rather than highlighting in stages as you would normally paint this involves working backwards essentially. So starting with larger areas of lighter colours and then shading down with less paint.
As with all nmm painting the real trick is when you add those final white highlights and hot spots to trick the eye.
I鈥檓 pretty happy with the test result and compared to my other nmm painting it was much quicker although a little messier if I鈥檓 honest but I鈥檓 sure with more practice with the paints this will improve.
Cheers! Daz
Here's Robute Skulliman finished for my Silver Skulls army.
This month I have to finish painting this miniature and a Primaris librarian for a game on Warhammer TV against my brother soon.
I imagine this guy to still be Guilliman but in Mortis armour while on campaign with the Silver Skulls.
I removed the ultramarine icons and sculpted Silver Skulls icons to match the rest of my army.
The blue flames and eyes are to match in with the spot colour on my army.
Cheers! Daz
I thought I'd share with you my current 40k Space Marine army project.
With the release of 8th edition 40k and the new Primaris marines I thought it was a great opportunity to build a new army and learn the new system.
The Dark Imperium box came with a force of marines that I intended to build onto to bulk out my army.
I then had to make the all important decision as to what chapter I would do my new army. Knowing that I wanted to get something on the table top quickly I decided on a metallic colour scheme as these are fast to produce and are very forgiving when it comes to shading and highlighting.
I then had a look at the available chapters in steel armour and settled on the Silver Skulls chapter.
I remember the Silver Skulls from the original Rogue trader 40k book and knew they had a solid background so they where an easy choice.
The chapter symbol is the old Iron Warrior icon from the old Chaos space marine transfer sheet, luckily I had plenty of these to use.
The main armour for the marines is simply a black undercoat then leadbelcher spray then wash nuln oil and black ink mix. This allowed me to get the main part of each marine painted quickly so I could focus on the helmets and other details.
Here is what I've got done so far, I'm just assembling more Hellblasters and inceptors right now.
Hope you like
Here is my painted version of the new Rogue Trader Elucia Vhane that I also sculpted for the new Kill Team Rogue Trader expansion released today!
My inspiration was taken from the amazing concepts from John Blanche when both sculpting and painting this miniature.
I wanted her to feel like a piece if Johns art work with the chosen colour pallet and background.
It's enjoyable to paint your own miniatures and also a great learning experience!
I hope you like!
Cheers, Daz
here's my finished entry for the Age of Sigmar Golden Demon. This miniature has been sat on my desk for quite a while and the Golden Demon competition was a great excuse to finish it!
I was lucky to get a custom head sculpted by Seb Perbet for this miniature which I think added loads of character to the piece.
I went with a colour pallet that reflected the traditional colours of Victorian Steam engines which I think worked well alongside the pitted metal effects.
The competition was tough in the staff category and was very lucky to receive gold. Congrats to all the winners! 馃檪
Joe sculpted these amazing Fyre Slayers and are his first miniatures released as a citadel designer.
Great work Joe!
Inspired (obviously) by the art in the Fyre Slayer book.
Cheers! Daz
I've painted hundreds of minis over the years but I've never painted one for my brother Dave. He is the reason why I started with this wonderful and creative hobby of ours!
Today is his 40th birthday and he loves Blood Angels Space Marines so to say thank you and happy birthday I painted him this Primaris Captain inspired by the Art of John Blanche.
Happy birthday Dave, thanks for bringing home that White Dwarf magazine back in 1992! 馃榿
We have had a bit of Blood Bowl fever here at work recently so i took the opportunity to paint up my classic Skaven team. I've had the team for years but never had the chance to paint it till the new edition of the game was released last Christmas.
I love these classic Jes Goodwin sculpts, full of character and pretty mean looking for Skaven!
I went for contrasting colours of purple and yellow with some classic chequered patterns for details.
It was a fun little project and painting more than one miniature was a challenge!
Hope you like! Daz
Been a while I know, sorry! :)
Here is a quick pic of a miniature i painted some time ago. It is a limited edition Goblin Warboss which i painted for a work friend as a gift.
It was a fun little project and my main aim was to add a lot of colour and go a little bit retro with the painting!
Hope you like, more posts soon....promise! ;)
Hi all,

I get asked a lot about painting non metallic metals, also
known as NMM. In this post I hope to explain the theory behind the technique
and also how I go about rendering this technique on a miniature.

To start with it's worth saying that the non metallic metal
technique is basically a way of painting convincing metal effects on to a 2D
surface. You will see this used on a lot of art when the artist has to paint
metallic areas without the aid of metallic paints. This Blood Angel art by Dave
Gallagher is a good example of this.

So with this in mind technically NMM should not really be
applied to miniature painting as it is a 2D technique and miniature painting is
a 3D art form. This certainly doesn't stop miniature painters from applying non
metallic metals to miniatures because if done well it can create a pleasing
finish.

Painting NMM is all about tricking the viewer into thinking
that what they are seeing is real metals, to do this you need to observe how
light reflects and reacts to different metallic surfaces. A great way to start
to lean this is to look at art work. You can pretty much transfer what the
artist has done onto your miniature, when I started learning NMM I painted a
few sword blades and copied what I saw on the art onto the blade. My Death
master Snikch is a good example.

When I approach painting a miniature in non metallics I
first imaging 4 points of light around the top of the model. This help me to
place my initial guide highlights over the model. I've found that imagining
these four spots of light at each corner of the miniature gives me a good
indication of where the light will be as I paint the model, it's easy to get
confused and a bit lost when painting NMM so this keeps it simple for me. The
amazing diagram below should help :).

Another trick when painting NMM is to change the tone of the
colour when the surface you are painting changes angles. So if you are painting
some gold armour and it has a corner change the tone from extreme light to
extreme dark at this point. You can see in the image below how much the
contrast changes in the armour surface as it changes shape, the foot is a good
example of the colour going from light to dark to light again giving the illusion
of a reflective surface.

What I've found helps a lot in achieving a realistic shiny
metallic finish is a the last stage of reflection highlights that are added.
When trying to learn this technique I observed that many painters didn't add
this effect to their NMM and I started to experiment with it. The stages below
on the Sanguinor which I painted show how this last stage can really give you
that shiny reflective effect to the surface. Adding these reflection lines and
hot spots over the surface in the correct places and on the edges can give you
a nice effect.

The stage that you add the glazes
is quite important as until this stage they are can appear very wooden and
lacking in colour. The glazes add a lot of richness to the surface and punch a
lot of colour in for you. Doing it at the end of the highlight and shade process
gives you a lot of control over the desired finish.

Here's my Skitarii that I painted a while ago. I designed this kit for the Adeptus Mechanicus release and thought it would be a good learning experience to paint one.
I kept the colour scheme quite simple but decided to go for bone coloured armour instead of the traditional metals.
It was fun to paint one of my own sculpts and a little strange as well!
I gave this miniature to Jes Goodwin after we had completed the project which he lead. It was a great experience and I certainly learned a lot! :)
Thanks for reading. Daz

Here are a few of my Genestealer Hybrids that I painted from the Deathwatch Overkill game.
I was lucky enough to design a lot of the Hybrids in the game and knew that i would have to paint some up after. :)
I went for a retro sci fi colour scheme which i think suits them quite a lot, the bight orange boiler suits contrast really well with the off white armour and also hint towards the industrial nature of the mining suits.
I'm hoping to paint some more up in the future and i'll get some detail shots up soon if you are interested.
Thanks for reading, Daz :)
Here's a quick post to share the dwarf that I have recently finished. It's the classic Bugmans rangers champion miniature which is still quite fun to paint!
It was painted as a gift for a friend and didn't take too long, it certainly was strange painting a metal model again!
I hope you like!
cheers, Daz

It felt like a long project with a house move stuck in the middle but i'm happy now it's done!
As far as painting i didn't want to stray too far from the original colour scheme but i did tweak it a little by adding a little more gold on the backpack for contrast.
When i scultped this miniature i always imagined him stood on a cliff top surveying a battle picking out the best warriors. I decided to theme the base around this idea, keeping it simple but giving him that setting.
I hope you like, cheers! Darren.
I'm sorry for the lack of posts recently. I've been mega busy with work and other things but I've not forgotten about the blog!
Here is a miniature that I have recently finished, I started painting it quite a while ago and it ended up as one of those projects that just sat there on the desk gathering dust. I got a but fed up with seek g it unfinished so I decided to get it done!
I went for a more washed out blue with the armour and a NMM approach. I was inspired by the Space Marine computer game that was released a few years ago.
I hope you like it and any comments are always welcome.
